ICPC charges PDP chieftain to court over N1m bribe
By Chinedum Nnadozie
Special Correspondent, Minna
The
Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission
(ICPC) has been dragged the National Vice Chairman, North Central zone of
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Magaji, to a Minna
High Court over an alleged bribery.
Magaji
was arraigned before Justice Munira Azukogi for offering a bribe of N1
million to Justice Ahmed Bima, a high court judge in Suleija.
A
two-count charge was slammed against Magaji on July 22. But the court
could not seat because Justice Azukogi had travelled out of town.
The
charge read in part that: “You Magaji on September 3, 2000 at Suleija
corruptly offered to give the sum of N1 million to Bima in order to show
favour to the defendants in suit No. NSHC/NB/25/2000 between Aliyu Halilu
Danloro and four others versus Ishaq Jikantoro, while the case was
pending before the court.
“By
attempting to offer the bribe, you, Magaji has committed an offence
contrary to and punishable under section 9(1) (b) of the ICPC Act.”
Thesecond
charge against Magaji was that he corruptly gave N500,000 to Justice Bima
at Suleija to seek favour from the defendants in the same case in another
attempt to distort justice in a case he (Magaji) is deeply involved.
According
to detailed ICPC charge analysis, Magaji was said to have entered the
chambers of Bima with a polythene bag containing N500,000, which he
dropped and drove away without Bima’s consent.
The
matter was reported to the state Grand Khadi who directed that the money
be deposited to the United Bank for Africa Minna branch.
Not
disturbed by the attempts to make him subvert the course of justice, Bima
delivered judgment against the Niger State governor and favoured Ishaq Jikantoro
in the emirship tussle.
Not satisfied by Bima’s
judgment, an appeal was made to the Supreme Court where the case was
still decided in favour of the candidate and against the Niger State
government.
