Cancelling state, council joint account would hurt rural growth - Commissioner   By Vincent Obia Correspondent, Lagos   Sokoto State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Gidado, on Thursday restated government’s opposition to plans to scrap the state-local government joint account, saying it would hinder rural development. During a visit to the corporate headquarters of Independent Newspapers in Lagos, he said the state was exempted from the allegations of financial misapplication being levelled against state governments, which formed the core argument of proponents of cancellation of the joint account. According to Gidado, “If the state-local government joint account is effectively and efficiently managed, the better it would be for Nigerians, especially those in rural areas where most programmes under the account are carried out.” He said Governor Attahiru Bafarawa’s government has awarded road contracts under the joint account to the tune of N5.7 billion with one road project sited in each of the three senatorial districts.   The commissioner said 30 per cent mobilisation fee for the contracts have been paid and that the projects were at various stages of completion. Gidado said government has also awarded contracts for the construction of 1,000 classrooms in the 23 local government areas of the state at the cost of N1.2 billion.       Copyright� 2002.
