Workers protest continued closure of Slok Airlines

By Bassey Udo

Snr Correspondent, Abuja

Hundreds of workers of Slok Airlines Limited on Thursday embarked on a peaceful demonstration in Abuja to protest the continued refusal of the Federal Government to lift the suspension on the company’s operational license.

Their protest march terminated at the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) where they solicited the intervention of the labour to persuade the government to look into their plight.

Government had, more than four months ago, announced the suspension of the airlines for what the Minister of Aviation, Mallam Isa Yuguda described as offences bordering on “unethical practices”.

The workers alleged that despite several attempt by its management to dialogue with government on the issue, they have neither been obliged a response nor an explanation of what constitutes “unethical practices” for which the company was being sanctioned.

Led by the company’s General Manager, Emeka Ikoku, the workers said after five months of not doing any work, their management has threatened to sack them since the burden of the huge liabilities caused by the closure was becoming unbearable.

Ikoku said if the government allows the workers to be thrown into the labour market, the already bad social menace in the country as a result of the growing population of the unemployed would be worsened.

NLC President, Adams Oshiomhole, who received the protesting workers urged them to remain peaceful and not take the laws into their hands, saying he was confident government would not deliberately want to take actions capable of frustrating private sector initiatives to create jobs in the country.
