Surrender stockpiled arms, Ibori tells ethnic leaders

By Uwakwe Abugu

Bureau Chief, Warri

Delta State government on Thursday charged leaders of ethnic groups involved in the Warri crisis to surrender all the arms and ammunition they have stockpiled in executing the bloody clashes, insisting that the leaders know where the weapons were hidden.

The leaders were amongst the participants at a stakeholders’ meeting on the crisis organised by a non-governmental organisation, Academic Associates Peace Works at Ibusa in Delta State.

The State Governor, James Ibori, who spoke through the state Commissioner for conflict Resolutions and Ethnic Relations, Mr. Ovuozorie Macaulay, at the stakeholders’ meeting,

Said it was clear that the ethnic leaders involved in the crisis know where the arms were hidden and that it was incumbent on them to surrender them if they genuinely support the ongoing peace process in the Warri areas. He said government was concerned that the arms were still being hidden by the parties to the conflicts, saying even if peace finally returns fully to the three Warri areas, the arms could still be used to execute intra communal quarrels or employed for other criminal ends.

Ibori explained that there could be no sustainable development in an environment devoid of peace and order.

“The whole essence of sustainable development is to improve on the ways people do thing that impact positively on their likes and to take deliberate and judicious steps to protect their environment.

“These cannot take root in the midst of disorder occasioned by distrust and want of the avenue for dialogue and basically, there are no fundamentally irreconcilable differences among our people in the Niger Delta,” the governor contended.
