Nigeria Image Project ’ll be people-driven, says Chikelu

By Stella Odueme,

Reporter, Lagos

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Chief Chukwuemeka Chikelu, has said the Nigeria Image Project will be people driven as it will focus on projecting the best of values inherent in Nigeria and Nigerians.

The minister, who stated this during an interactive session with senior media executives at the Muson Centre in Lagos, urged the media to give the government the much-needed support for the success of the project.

“The media is very vital to the success of this project and together we shall make this country a place we can be proud of by showcasing the best values inherent in Nigeria and Nigerians,” the minister said.

The project, which has the acronym, PRIDE, according to the minister, stands for Patriotism, Resourcefulness, Intellect, Distinction and Enterprise, and was meant to highlight the potentials of Nigeria and Nigerians to the outside world.

The minister said only about 0.00025 per cent of Nigerians were involved in the Advance Fee Fraud (419) scam, alleging that only greedy foreigners usually fall victim of the fraudsters. He added that the campaigns that would deal with the issue were already in the pipeline. According to Chikelu, the current programme aims to focus on the positive side of Nigerians and their achievements in various fields of endeavours worldwide.

He said the “number of Nigerians that are making very impressive and strategic contributions to the growth and development of businesses and nations around the world far outnumbers the handful that are involved in those extra-legal activities often highlighted in the media.
