African conference on ICT opens in Abuja July 26

By Tom Chiahemen

Senior Correspondent, Abuja

A five-day regional Ministerial Conference of the Association for Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), being hosted by Nigeria, is expected to open in Abuja on Monday, with the theme, “Integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Education:  Issues and Challenges for Africa.”

The Conference, scheduled to hold at the Nicon Hilton Hotel Abuja from July 26 - 30, would attract the participation of African ministers of education, international development partners, and stakeholders in ICT, as well as experts in Distance Education and Open Learning (DEOL) from different parts of the world.

According to the Minister of State for Education, Hajiya Bintu Ibrahim Musa, the conference is being organised with a view to exploring the great potential of Information ICTs in meeting the great challenges of equity and quality in the delivery/provision of education in Africa.

Given the enormous challenges facing African countries in the use of ICT in education, the Abuja conference, according to the Minister of State, was specifically seeking to promote the use of ICT and distance education as a cost-effective and affordable way of expanding and improving the quality of education system.

It would also facilitate the exchange of experiences in the use of ICTs in education among African countries as well as provide the ministers of education with the concepts and tools for formulating viable national ICT and DEOL policies.
