Nigerians shower  encomiums on Jakande at 75

By Bolaji Adepegba

Senior Correspondent, Lagos

The rare qualities of the first executive Governor of Lagos State and former Works Minister, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, were again held up for public admiration on Thursday by eminent Nigerians at the presentation of his biography, Legacies of Leadership to mark his 75th birthday.

In his capacity as chief host of the event, the Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, who was represented by his Deputy, Chief Femi Pedro, chronicled the achievement of Jakande from his early years and said: “There is no way the history of progressive politics can be written without acknowledging the immense contribution of LKJ.” Situating Jakande’s role as his predecessor in office, Tinubu said: “Through his outstanding performance, which completely dwarfed his predecessors’ LKJ demonstrated practically the superiority of democracy over dictatorship.”

The Chairman of the occasion, Chief Tunde Fanimokun, who had served under Jakande as a permanent secretary recalled how Jakande, like Tinubu faced strong opposition because of his creation of 23 local government areas from the original eight on assumption of office. He said the decision of the courts at that time did not stop Jakande from achieving his development goals, calling those councils created, area office. Brigadier General Mobolaji Johnson, the first military Governor of Lagos state saw in Jakande, a great community leader. He told the story of how he left government and the military and settled in the same neighbourhood at Ilupeju with Jakande and the role of a rallying point the former governor played.
