Ekiti pledges assistance to UNICEF programmes By David Atalese Special Correspondent, Ado-Ekiti   Ekiti State government has pledged its continued assistance to the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF)- assisted programmes in the state. The Governor, Ayodele Fayose, gave the pledge while declaring open a two-day state level review meeting of EGN/ UNICEF Country Programme of Operations 2004- 2007 in Ado-Ekiti. Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Ade Alofe, the governor said since the programmes focused mainly on the lives of children and women in the society, the state government would also pay its counterpart funding. He urged all the programme officers to put in more zeal in order to ensure better performance of the programme to justify the assistance given by UNICEF, state and local governments. Earlier in his address of welcome, the Permanent Secretary of the State Planning Commission, Mr. Lanre Aribisala, said the meeting would take stock of the performance of the programme and its impact on the target group and suggest ways of improvement. In another development, the state government has called on contractors working on its roads to execute the projects according to specifications. The State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Chief Dele Okeya, who made the call while inspecting the Ikere-Ise-Emure road, said the state government would not hesitate to blacklist any contractor that performs below expectation.       Copyright� 2002.
