Why FG must release Lagos LGs funds, by AD chieftain
By Bolaji Adepegba
Senior Correspondent, Lagos
The
National Vice Chairman (Southwest) of the Alliance for Democracy (AD),
Alhaji Olatunji Amzat, has said there is no fundamental reason why the
Federal Government should not release the funds due the local governments
in Lagos State, saying it is a part of a grand plan of witch-hunting.
In an
interview in Lagos, Amzat told Daily Independent:
“Although
we created 57 local governments, we have followed due process of law.
Yet, we are not asking that money should be provided for the 57 local
government councils. Money that was coming to the state for the local
governments should be paid to the local governments concerned. What we
now do with that money depends on the needs of the various local
governments. The areas occupied by the 20 local governments have to be
developed. The other states, which called their own development centres,
will still disburse money to the so-called development centres. Even if
it is from one local that you carved out more local governments, the area
that you carved out will still need to be developed.”
Amzat
pointed out that the hiccup in the creation of the local government is a
problem created by the Federal Government because the state had carried
out its legitimate responsibility as far as local government creation was
concerned.
“The House
of Assembly passed everything. The return, which was required by the
Constitution to be made to the National Assembly, was made. I was a party
to the submission. We went with fanfare to deliver it. If it is not
listed yet in the constitution, it is not the fault of the state
government; it is the fault of the Federal Government,” he said.
He said
that President Olusegun Obasanjo was acting in tandem with the trend in Black
Africa where leaders do not suffer opposition.
