Nigeria image project - a step in the right direction

The Nigeria image project which was recently announced by President Olusegun Obasanjo, one must say, is very timely taking into cognizance the corrupt and bad image the country has been saddled with over the years through the greedy and selfish nature of a few.

Worse hit by this image problem are Nigerians who travel abroad and are treated like criminals with their actions and motives under security scrutiny.

The negative aspect of Nigeria’s image on the economy and foreign investment cannot be over emphasized either.  While the government, has been on the quest to get foreign investors, to invest in the economy, our image has continued to hinder progress in this aspect of our lives.

Over the years, the label of corruption, advance fee fraud (419), drug trafficking, ritual murders, armed robbery and other heinous crimes have continued to chase prospective investors away while the negative reports from the foreign media which always see only the negative aspect of developing countries has weighed adversely Nigeria image abroad.

The fact that the new initiative by the President has elated many is a step in the right direction.

The project which has been tagged “Image and National Economics” according to reports, is billed as a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors aimed at projecting positively Nigeria’s image on local and international media.

It is, however, hoped that this re-branding effort will also spread through the rank and file of those in  government institutions, while hoping that “business as usual” will no longer be the order of the day and Nigerians will be proud to be called Nigerians.
