Igbinedion rewards Sports Festival contingent with N100 million   By Benson Agwu Correspondent, Benin City   Governor Lucky Igbinedion of Edo State yesterday redeemed his pledge by rewarding the state contingent to  the recently concluded National Sports Festival, tagged Abuja 2004, as he approved the sum of N50 million for the renovation of existing equipment, and infrastructure, and also for the purchase of new ones. Igbinedion who announced this while presenting cash awards to the athletes also approved the sum of N100,000 each for the 99 gold medals hauled by the athletes, N75,000 each for the 74 silver medallists and N50,000 for the 77 bronze medallists. The governor who also approved the sum N20,000 for each of the officials of Edo State Sports Council who participated in the Sports festival dolled out immediately the cash award of N69,250,000 to all the athletes. Igbinedion pledged that the Sports Council Supporters Club would receive their own award which was not specified within the month. While congratulating the sports contingent, Governor Igbinedion gave a special award of N500,000 to Mr. Philip Enaike, the overall  best athlete  who  won five Gold medals for the state; and Mr. Faith Bazuaye who was given N300,000 who emerged a star player in special sports (Table Tennis). Restating his policy thrust to continue to give every necessary financial support to the state sports council, Igbinedion enjoined the athletes not to  bury their heads for losing the first position because they succeeded in making the state proud at the National Sports Stadium, Abuja.       Copyright� 2002.
