Attah Decries Impact of Petroleum Exploration on Agriculture From Efem Nkanga in Uyo Akwa Ibom State Gover-nor, Obong Victor Attah, has declared that petroleum exploration and exploitation activities in the Niger Delta region have impacted negatively on the growth of the agricultural sector. Obong Attah made this declaration yesterday in a keynote address delivered at the 4th conference of commissioners of Agriculture in the Niger Delta region holding in Uyo. The governor lamented that Agriculture should be regarded as "endangered species" in the list of economic activities in the Niger Delta because of geographical problems like land and beach erosion and flooding. Obong Attah who was represented by his deputy, Obong Chris Ekpenyong at the event, called on the commissioners to evolve policies that would stop the negative developments and create favourable conditions that will accelerate the growth of the Agricultural sector in the region. He disclosed that Akwa Ibom State government has paid its counter part fund of N76.2 million for the cassava mosaic disease control programe under its cassava competitiveness programme. The governor also reiterated different programmes initiated by his administration aimed at ensuring abundant food production and improved tree crop plantation. According to Attah, the State government has paid for 500,000 seedlings from NIFOR Benin for the 2004 planting season and an additional 500,000 sprouted nuts for seedlings development for the 2005 planting season.
