No Conoil Staff Was Held Hostage Contrary to the impression created in the media, no Conoil staff was held hostage and as a result no Conoil staff was released. However, the crisis involved an oil services company, Pride Forasol Drilling Nigeria Limited with international headquarters in France and offices in Port Harcourt with some of its contract workers whose contract will terminate in September. THISDAY checks revealed that Pride Forasol as an oil services company works for many oil companies in Nigeria which require its services. The current crisis between the company and its staff is purely an internal matter of the company and does not in any way affect staffers of Conoil Producing who are enjoying a great working relationship with their employer. Further investigations revealed that the workers were demanding for salary areas, quarterly safety allowance, hotel and transport allowances during crew change and pay-off at the expiration of the contract. However, some prominent leaders of Bayelsa have condemned the action of the workers as counter productive as it amounts to the workers taking the law into their hands. In the same vein, leaders of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) have also dissociated their association from the action of the workers, describing it as a pure labour issue. Demonstrating at the offices of THISDAY Newspaper in Yenogoa, the newly elected President of the association, Comrade Oyeinfie Emmanuel Jonjon stated that contrary to insinuations, his group had absolutely nothing to do with the crisis. According to Jonjon, the hostage saga was a "pure labour dispute" between the contract staff and management of Pride Forastol Nigeria Limted. Jonjon said that it was wrong for anybody to associate the group with kidnapping and vandalisation of oil installation.
