Assembly Moves to Save Speaker, Deputy From Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri Apparently determined to stem the tide of frequent impeachment threats and ensure stability in the legislature, Imo State House of Assembly has passed a motion, amending the process of removing either the speaker or his deputy from office as it resumed sitting for the second legislative year. Under the amended procedure, which is to be included in the House rule, demand for the removal of the speaker or his deputy consequent upon any allegation raised against them, would be subjected to an investigation panel to be constitutted by the speaker. The panel would be given 30 days within which to conclude its investigation and report back to the House for deliberation. Based on the recommendations of the investigation panel, the House with two thirds majority, can then remove the speaker or his deputy or rule otherwise.
