Farmers Petition Obasanjo over Corruption By Olawale Olaleye Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria, an umbrella for special crop farmers has petitioned President Olusegun Obasanjo over allegation of corruption and fraud against a top official of the Ministry of Agriiculture, (name withheld) stressing that he has used his office mainly to award contracts against the advice of the cocoa farmers by using his friends, majority of whom are Indians to front for him. But one of the Special Assistants to the official (name withheld) described the allegations as untrue and that the official's office was already aware of the development and had equiped itself with counter documents to dismiss what he described as imagined allegations. However, in the petition addressed to the president and jointly signed by Aminu Yakubu (National Secretary), Monday Izedomi (State Chairman), Moses Njok (Cross Rivers State), Adegoke Adeola (State Chairman, Ondo), E.O Jaiyeola (National Officer and Kogi State Chairman), C.E Obaji (State Coordinator, Cross River), F.A Oba (Ekiti State Chairman), Joan Obazee (Women Trustee, Edo State) and L.A Abolarin (Women Leader, NCDC). The farmers alleged that while the official was asked to lead the 11-man committee Cocoa Rehabilitation Committee with the cocoa farmers in the majority, he chose to reconstitute his own committee called National Cocoa Development Commi-ttee and has since refused to listen to them. While alleging that the oficial has scant regard for the group, they said "the official embarked in reckless contract award for imput which was needed.
