Construction of First Private Refinery Begins From John Iwori in Yenagoa Construction of Tonwei Refinery Limited, the first private refinery to be given a licence by the Federal Government to operate in the country has begun. President Olusegun Oba-sanjo in November 2002 performed the foundation laying ceremony of Tonwei Refinery Company Limited at Agge in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Represented by the former Presidential Adviser on Petroleum and Energy and now Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Funso Kukpolokun, President Obasanjo then expressed hope that the establishment of the Tonwei Refinery Limited would go a long way in boosting the production of petroleum products for domestic consumption and export. Deputy Senate President, Senator Ibrahim Mantu, was among other dignitaries that graced the epoch making occasion. Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Tonwei Refinery Limited, Prince Timinepre-George Tongnbor said in a telephone chat with THISDAY at the weekend, said all agreements on the take-off of the project have been signed with its technical partners and consultants. "As I'm talking to you now, the engineering design and survey of the site have been completed. Already, the host communities have been mobilised to begin clearing.
