Bozimo flays N.Delta leaders over crises
CAJETAN MMUTA,
Asaba
COMMUNITY
leaders in the crisis-torn Niger Delta area have been criticised for always
fanning the embers of conflict in the zone, and only them can lead the way
towards permanent solution to the crisis there.
Minister of Police Affairs Chief
Brodericks Bozimo who slammed the leaders weekend for their lack of commitment
to resolve the crisis, announced government’s donation of 17 new marine boats
totalling N99 million for effective policing of the creeks and riverine
communities in the Niger Delta region.
Chief Bozimo at a press conference in
Asaba, said government is desirous to establish an intensive training command to
meet the security exigencies of the area.
The minister explained however that the
exercise was on-going with the launch of its first phase in Port Harcourt Rivers
State Thursday, adding also that 13 of the boats were purchased in their new
brands while three were acquired from the local markets but are of customized
standards.
He said the nation at present harbours 21
commands with marine topography, stressing further that apart from the
commencement of police marine exercise in the Niger Delta area, the gesture
would be extended to other areas where the operations of the command would
mostly be needed.
Such places he listed as boundary areas of
Lokoja in Kogi State, Yola in Adamawa State and a host of others apart from the
southern states.
The strategy according to him is to
checkmate the incursion of gendarmes from Cameroun in cross border attacks and
related criminalities along Nigeria’s border areas.
While deploring unemployment rate amongst
youths in the Niger Delta region, the minister said government was not unaware
of the challenge but assured that steps are urgently being devised to put the
recurring ugly trend to rest.
On efforts to reorientate the minds of
officers of the Nigeria Police Force to attain complete professional excellence
the minister stated that an independent monitoring unit approved by President
Olusegun Obasanjo has been fashioned out to scrutinize the activities of police
commands and their personnel.
The minister further blamed community
heads and opinion leaders in the Niger Delta region for not doing enough to save
the situation in the areas.
He argued that the neglect had forced the
despatch of military task force "Operation Hope" to the crisis ridden
areas of the region. He however said the new look marine force would replace the
presence of the current task force.
