Govt gives go ahead for community policing

PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo said yesterday in Akure that the federal government has given the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, approval to re-introduce community policing in the country.

Answering reporters’ questions shortly after attending the wedding of former Miss Adetutu Adebola and Diche Patrick at the Cathedral Church of St. David, Ijomu, Ondo State, Obasanjo said the police was not static and was in a process of change.

He said the police had begun a pilot project with some states of the federation to experiment on the community policing scheme, adding that the police needed to work closely with the public to achieve results.

He said the police must be proactive in the fight against crime, and therefore, they must be given information and also be ready to receive useful information from the public.

"The police will be just as effective as we can help them," he said, and charged the public to always cooperate with the police in the fight against crime and criminality within the community.

Obasanjo said, however, that "a blanket condemnation of the police is not good. Yes, we can condemn, but when we need to encourage them, we must give them encouragement."

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports hat as the President settled down to the wedding solemnisation in the church, the police was engaged outside in a repeated public announcements for guests to be "beware of pick pockets".

"Mind your pockets, mind your handsets, mind your hand bags and your wrist watches. Pick pockets are around," the police roared through a small public address system hanging on the shoulder of a constable.
