Church condemns govt's bid to split Labour
From Emmanuel Ande, Gombe

THE Gombe Diocese of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has urged the Federal Government to drop its bid to decentralise the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

In a statement at the weekend, the clergymen advised President Olusegun Obasanjo to concentrate his effort on fighting corruption in the polity and not to weaken the NLC, which is "the voice of the voiceless Nigerians".

The statement signed by Bishop Henry Ndukuba lamented that in spite of government's avowed commitment to the anti-graft crusade, the vice was still very pronounced in the public sector.

Ndukuba pointed out that the move to split Labour was undemocratic because the NLC remains the only virile opposition to Olusegun Obasanjo's government.

He appealed to the National Assembly not to endorse the anti-Labour bill.

"The bill has some elements of evil, so our lawmakers should not legalise evil in a democratic government", the clerics said.

The forum also condemned government's frequent resort to fuel price increase, adding that the policy was pauperising Nigerians and over-heating the economy.

It, therefore, urged the government to quickly repair the refineries and save Nigerians from the trauma of fuel scarcity and price increase.

The clerics, however, acknowledged government's efforts to curb the spread of the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and urged non-governmental organisations and churches to support the government.
