Guaranty Trust IPO closes Wednesday amid growing interest
By Gbenga Agbana

A S Guaranty Trust Bank Plc's N10.6 billion share offer closes this week, there are indications that it may have been oversubscribed, an indication that the bank can meet the new N25 billion minimum capital base.

The Guardian learnt that the offer, which opened on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 and closes on Wednesday would enhanced the bank's capital base and shareholders' fund.

At N10.60 per share, public interest in the bank's one billion- share offer has been strong, with demand for the subscription forms out-stripping supply during the first two weeks of the exercise.

Emerging market fund managers and capital market watchers noted that one of the hallmarks of the offer had been its unique marketing campaign. The 14-year-old bank has employed a variety of communication channels to showcase the offer, the brand values and the bank's strength.

At the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) bi-ennial conference in Abuja, the NSE Director-General, Dr. Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke noted that the bank's public issue had "in a way energised the nation's stock market."

The bank began its marketing campaign for the Initial Public Offer (IPO) with several investors' fora to develop interest in the initiative.

A week to the commencement of the offer, the bank sent short messages to thousands of Nigerians to wet their appetite on the IPO.
