Council chiefs move to avert crisis in Benue communities
From Simeon Nwakaudu, Makurdi

E FFORTS are now on as to avert fresh crisis between two communities in Benue State over a disputed land. The land is reported to have been taken over by a government top shot who planted citrus trees on it without the consent of the community that claims ownership of the land.

The affected communities are Adum-East in Obi Local Council and Ochimode Ibilla of Oju Council.

Both share boundaries with Gwer/Konshisha which witnessed a bloody communal clash earlier in the year.

The Guardian gathered that the government functionary had taken over the land and planted citrus trees without the permission of the elders of Ochimode-Ibilla community, who claim to own the land.

Subsequently, youths from Ochimode-Ibilla stormed the piece of land, uprooting all the citrus trees. Sources close to the Adum-East community said they were forced to react because uprooting plants in their culture was an abomination, which needed cleansing.

Tension is mounting between the two communities as youths are being armed by leaders in the area to reclaim the disputed land.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Oju Council, Mr. Acha Otiyongo, has said that only divine intervention would avert the crisis in the area.

He announced the setting up of a committee in conjunction with the neighbouring Obi Council to look into the looming crisis and fashion out ways to avert it.

Already, Otiyongo has met with the deputy Chairman of Obi Council, Mr. Moses Oluwa to discuss issues.
