Ekiti elders decry crisis in state Assembly
From Ifedayo Sayo, Ado-Ekiti

THE Ekiti Council of Elders has decried the recent crisis in the state House of Assembly which has led to the removal of the principal officers, including the Speaker, Mr. Sola Ajigbolamu.

The council, in a statement at the weekend by its Chairman, Bureau of Publicity, Chief Idowu Odeyemi, said the crisis had been a source of embarrassment to all Ekiti people.

Besides, the crisis has the potential of affecting the relationship with the executive, as well as threatening the relative peace the state may have been enjoying after the recently concluded governorship election petition.

The council noted that the cause of the crisis was the refusal of the sacked leadership to pass into law a new bill on council administration, which would allow the state Governor Ayodele Fayose, to remove any erring council chairman.

The bill, according to the council, was unnecessary particularly when it is coming on the heels of alleged illegal deductions by the state governor from council's monthly allocations.

"Whatever the intervention of the governor is in wanting to have the bill passed into law, recent developments have made the bill controversial and should, therefore, be withdrawn in the interest of peace of Ekiti State and because of the tension it has generated in the polity", it said.

The statement advised the state lawmakers against "unnecessary confrontation" with the state executive but urged them to be firm and stand by their oath of office, passing only those laws that promote peace and good governance and which are consistent with the 1999 Constitution.
