Reps panel wants states to supervise federal projects
From Charles Coffie-Gyamfi, Abeokuta

W ORRIED by the poor quality of work by contractors handling federal projects in various states, the House of Representatives Committee on Government Affairs is proposing that state governments should be empowered to supervise projects in their domains.

The committee Chairman, Mr. Dayo Ogunniyi, gave the hint last weekend during a tour of ecological-prone areas in Ogun State.

According to him, in view of the fact that federal projects executed in the states are not only of poor quality but also delayed unnecessarily, it has become inevitable that state governments should be empowered to supervise such projects to ensure quality work.

Ogunniyi, who was in Abeokuta after the tour, said it was also to assess how ecological funds sent to the state were spent.

He assured that punitive measures would be taken against contractors who have handled federal projects in the states shabbily.

The committee chairman commended Ogun State government for setting up a Ministry of Environment to tackle ecological problems.

Ogunniyi also commended the administration's policies on sustainable development through the execution of various programmes.

The Environment Commissioner, Mr. Anthony Ojeshina, who conducted the committee members round during the tour, disclosed that most of the ecological problems facing the state were caused by blockage of drainage as observed at Joju Road, Temidire and Pamisin Igbala in Sango, Ogun State.

The commissioner appealed to community leaders to help discourage indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the drainage.
