New appointments at Champion newspapers
The
Board of Directors of Champion Newspapers Limited (CNL) has approved new
promotions and movements of top editorial and management staff as part of an
ongoing process to strengthen the organisation’s operations.
The move lifted Mr. Emeka Omeihe, to the
position of Executive Director (Publications and Production). Before now he was
Chairman, Editorial Board. Mr. Andy Ike Ezeani,until now General Manager,
Publications, becomes the Chairman, Editorial Board while Mr.Ugo Onuoha,
the General Manager (Planning, Development and Special Duties), who manned
the company’s simultaneous printing arm in Owerri, Imo State, returns as General
Manager (Publications). In the Marketing division, Mr. Sam Ibemere was elevated
as General Manager (Marketing) while the Senior Group Advert Manager, Mr.
Martins Uba Nwamadi becomes the Deputy General Manager, Marketing.
The Board also announced the elevation of
the Editor of Daily Champion, Mr. Augsten Adamu, to the position
of Acting Deputy General Manager (Publications), Mr. Ifeanyi Ubabukoh, Opinion
Page Editor and Senior Member of the Editorial Board becomes Deputy Chairman
Editorial Board while the Editor, Sporting Champion, Mr. Oluseyi
Fasugba, has been named Acting Editor,
Daily Champion.
Similarly, Senior Audit Manager, Mr. Lucky
Anugwara, now becomes Deputy General Manager (Finance) while the appointment of
Mrs. Chinwe Onyeji was confirmed as Personnel and Administration Manager.
Also promoted were Mr. Sam Ameh, former
deputy sports editor, Daily Champion, who now becomes acting
editor, Sporting Champion as well as Messrs Matthew Enenche
Ogwuche and Innocent Nwobodo as Bureau Chief, Abuja, and Project Manager,
respectively.
Mr. Omeihe,
a pioneer staff of CNL took his first degree in political science from the
University of Ibadan in 1979. In 1987, he obtained a certificate in Journalism
from the Thompson Foundation, London, and in 1991 a Master of Science degree in
Political Science from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Before joining CNL as Pioneer Political
Editor on August 12, 1988, Mr. Omeihe was at various times Deputy Editor of
The Statesman, and Features Editor, Satellite Newspapers Limited. He
also worked briefly with Concord Monitor Newspapers, New Hampshire United
States of America. At CNL Mr. Omeihe rose over the years to become at various
times Editor, Business Champion, Editor, Daily Champion, General Manager
(Publications) and Chairman Editorial Board.
Mr. Onuoha,
returns to a familiar turf as helmsman of the publications division. An alumnus
of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he bagged a degree in Mass
Communication in 1985, he joined CNL as a staff reporter on October 4, 1988.
Before then, Mr. Onuoha had served as a Senior Staff Writer at The
Broadcaster Magazine and reporter Thisweek Magazine. He
has held several positions at CNL. rising to become Deputy News Editor, Editor
of the now rested Business Champion, Editor, Sunday Champion,
Editor, Daily Champion, General Manager (Publications)
and General Manager (Eastern Operations).
Mr. Ezeani,
the new Chairman, Editorial Board, joined CNL on September 1988 as Chief
Correspondent (Arts, Culture and Literary Matters).He holds a Bachelor of
Science degree in Mass Communication which he obtained in 1985 from the
University of Lagos before proceeding to do a Masters Degree programme in
Political Science, in 1987.
Mr. Ezeani who joined CNL from The
Guardian where he was a staff writer has risen in CNL over the years to
attain his present position. He has held the positions of Features Editor,
Deputy Editor, Daily Champion, Editor, Sunday Champion and
Editor Daily Champion. Mr. Ezeani was later elevated as Deputy General
Manager (Publications), then General Manager (Publications). A
Fulbright scholar, he has attended several local and international journalism
programmes.
New General Manager (Marketing), Mr.
Samuel Ibemere, holds a first degree in International Relations from the
University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU) and a master’s degree in
Business Administration (Marketing), MBA, from the Enugu State University of
Technology (ESUT).
He joined CNL in 1989 as Circulation
Assistant and rose to the posts of Circulation Supervisor (1992) Zonal Marketing
Supervisor (1993), Assistant Circulation Manager (1995), Circulation Manager
(1996) and Deputy General Manager (Marketing) in 2002.
He is an Associate Member of both the
Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) and National Institute of Marketing of
Nigeria (NIMN).
Mr. Martins Uba Nwamadi
joined Champion Newspapers in 1991 as Asst. Editor,
Business Champion. Prior to this, he was a reporter with Daily Times
. He holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in Mass Communication from University of
Lagos.
Mr. Nwamadi worked variously as Project
Manager and Group Advert manager before his elevation as Deputy General Manager,
Marketing.
The new Ag. Deputy General Manager
(Publications), Mr. Adamu, joined CNL as a pioneer staff on September 15,
1988. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication obtained from the
University of Maiduguri in 1987. Before pursuing his higher education, Mr Adamu
had worked with the then Bendel Broadcasting Service (BBS). He was later to work
as Foreign Affairs Reporter for the Herald Newspaper, Ilorin, Kwara State before
joining Champion Newspapers in 1988. At CNL, he was at different times Bendel
state correspondent, Kwara state correspondent and chief correspondent, Edo and
Delta states.
He was later recalled to CNL headquarters
as Assistant Editor, Sunday Champion. Mr. Adamu later became News
Editor, Daily Champion, Editor, Sunday Champion and
Deputy Editor, Daily Champion, before assuming the editorship of
Daily Champion in the year 2000.
The new Deputy Chairman, Editorial Board,
Mr. Ubabukoh, holds a Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.) in Mass
Communication of the University of Lagos, 1981. He began his journalism career
as one of the pioneer reporters of The Guardian in 1981. He was Features
Editor of the New Nation magazine (1982-83) before moving to National
Concord where he rose from Senior Reporter to News Editor and Group
Assistant Editor. He has edited both the Sunday Mail, (1991-92), and the
Daily Mail (1992-93).
Mr. Ubabukoh joined Champion
newspapers as Opinion-Editorial Page Editor and Member of Editorial Board on May
1, 1993. He was promoted Senior Member of the Editorial Board in January, 1998,
and has remained on the board for more than eleven years. He had also served as
Deputy Editor, Sunday Champion (1993-96) and deputy editor,
Daily Champion (2000).
On his part, Mr. Fasugba who
assumes the editorship of Daily Champion in acting capacity joined
the organisation on February 17, 1992, as a Senior Reporter Sporting
Champion. He attended the University of Lagos (UNILAG) where he obtained
Bachelor and Master degrees in Mass Communication. Mr. Fasugba also holds the
Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) professional certificate.
He began his journalism career as
Sub-Editor/Staff Writer with The Punch from where he moved to the now
rested Sketch Press Limited in 1988 as Senior Correspondent. Before his
appointment as the Acting Editor, Daily Champion, he had worked as
Deputy Editor and Editor, Sporting Champion.
Mr. Ameh who takes over from Mr. Fasugba
as acting editor, Sporting Champion, joined Champion Newspapers on
October 2, 1997 as assistant sports editor. He was promoted deputy sports editor
a year later, a position he held until his latest appointment. A 1985 graduate
of Mass Communication of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Ameh began his
journalism career at the Benue State government-owned Voice
Newspapers, where he rose to the position of sports editor before joining CNL.
CNL’s Deputy General Manager Finance,
Mr. Anugwara holds a bachelors degree from the University of Maiduguri. He
is also a member of the Institute of Purchasing and Supply of Britain and the
Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) He joined CNL as stores
assistant on December 2, 1991, and rose to become Senior Audit Manager before
his present elevation.
Mrs. Onyeji,
who now becomes the substantive Personnel and Administration Manager holds a
first degree in English from the University of Nigeria. She is also an associate
member of both the Nigerian Institute of Management and the Institute of
Personnel Management.
Joining CNL in 1990 as an Advert
Executive, Mrs. Onyeji was later redeployed to the Administration Department as
an Administrative Assistant where she quickly rose first to the position of
Personnel/Admin Supervisor, Assistant Personnel Manager and Deputy Personnel/
Admin Manager before her elevation as Personnel and Administration Manager.
Mr. Nwobodo, holds a first degree in Mass
Communication of the University of Nigeria (1984) and began his career in
journalism in 1986 as a staff writer with the defunct Satellite
newspaper. He later became Acting News Editor of Satellite before joining CNL in
1988 as the pioneer Chief Correspondent, Abuja Bureau, until 1992 when he
returned to the Features Desk. He later served as Deputy News Editor
(Daily Champion), Assistant Editor, (Sunday Champion), and
Deputy Editor (Saturday Champion), before joining the Marketing
Division as Project Editor.
Mr. Ogwuche whose position as Bureau Chief, Abuja, has
been elevated to that of departmental manager holds a first degree in Political
Science from the University of Ibadan (1986) and a Masters of Science degree in
International Relations and Strategic Studies from the University of Jos (1998).
He joined CNL in 1989 as Bauchi State Correspondent and rose to the post of
Chief Correspondent in 1998. In 2000, Mr. Ogwuche was redeployed to CNL’s Abuja
Bureau as Head of Editorial Operations. He was acting as the Abuja Bureau Chief
before his confirmation.
