NSITF to sue defaulting employers :collects N36.62bn

The Nigeria Social
Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), said it would sue employers of labour in the country who failed to comply with the NSITF Act.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja yesterday, the managing director of the organization, Alhaji Ahmed Rufa’i Muhammad, said that the NSITF would undertake compliance inspection visits to the premises of employers as part of efforts to ensure full compliance.
He said that all employers of labour in the private sector who are registered under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA), either as companies or partnerships are required to register with the NSITF scheme.
According to him, members of the defunct National Provident Fund (NPF), scheme automatically became registered members of the NSITF and that their existing membership numbers and contributions were converted to credit months in order to ensure continuity.

Niger presents bill on dissolution of new LGs

The Kogi State government has approved various contracts totalling N528 million for execution in different parts of the state. According to information commissioner Mustapha Imam, the contracts include the rehabilitation of Ganaja/Ajaokuta road awarded at a cost of N330 million. Imam gave the hints while addressing newsmen shortly after the state executive council meeting in Lokoja on Wednesday. He said the Ganaja/Ajaokuta road had become a death trap, and that its rehabilitation would bring relief to motorists. The commissioner said contract was also awarded for the construction of the NTA transmitter building at Idah at a cost of N21.5 million. Imam said the council approved N156.793 million for the purchase of heavy duty machines for the state Ministry of Works. Approval was also given for the construction of Omala River bridge, Icheke, at a cost of N30 million, he added. The commissioner stressed that the state government was committed to alleviating the suffering of the masses. He therefore, urged the people of the state to continue to support the administration.


Kebbi distributes 6,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer

The Kebbi State government has so far distributed six thousand metric tonnes of assorted fertiliser to the farmers across the state in order to boost agricultural production. Disclosing this to Daily Trust in an exclusive interview, the general manager of Kebbi State Agricultural Supply Company (KASCOM), Alhaji Usman Umar Aliero, explained that the distributed fertiliser was part of the 12,000 tonnes already procured by the state government. According to him the breakdown of the distribution showed that the 21 local government councils were allotted 300 metric tonnes for distribution to farmers at grassroot while the over three thousand tonnes were distributed to both medium and large scale farmers across the state. Alhaji Aliero further added that the criteria used in the distribution was based on tax-paying farmers and about three committees were set up to monitor both the distribution and forwarding of the commodity. He said traditional rulers and leaders of thought were directly involved in the exercise to ensure even distribution. The general manager, however, attributed the success of the exercise to the commitment and dedication exhibited by KASOM officials and members of the monitoring committee.

 


Yola LG polls: Court hears case today

A Federal High Court in Yola will today hear the case involving a member representing Yola South constituency, Hon. Ibrahim Waziri, who was arrested and detained by the police for allegedly masterminding electoral malpracties during the recent local government election in the state. Waziri had gone to the Federal High Court to seek leave to enforce his fundamental human right under section 34 (1) (a), 35 (1) and 36 (1) of the 1999 constitution and Articles 6 and 7 (d) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. He had also in a motion prayed for an order that the granted leave should operate as a stay of all actions, matters and proceedings to be taken by the respondent, that is the commissioner of police, Adamawa state. The presiding judge, Justice M.G, Umar who granted the prayers of Honurable Waziri after hearing counsel to the applicant, Onyi Ukaegbu, adjourned the matter to July 26, 2004 for hearing. It would be recall that eleven boys were arrested on the on the 9th of this month for allegedly trespassing the home of one Umaru of Yola town, who is a presiding officer, and damaged six ballot boxes, three bags containing electoral materials and some voters registers meant for the local government election in the area.
