Arewa, Niger Delta Youths Back Calls for SNC From Agaju Madugba in Kaduna Arewa Youth Forum and the Union of Niger Delta Youth rose from a joint meeting in Kaduna at the weekend and demanded the immediate convocation of a Sovereign National Conference. The groups decried the intermittent violent disturbances in parts of the North and the South south and appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in order to check the trend. Head of the northern delegation, Mallam Jibril Tafida and his Union of Niger Delta Youth counterpart, Mr Kingsley Akpan signed the communique. According to the communique, "though the issue of a Sovereign National Con-ference very sensitive, the Arewa Youth Forum and the Union of Niger Delta Youth have recognised the need for it, aside from the implications. The Arewa Youth will canvass the support of northern elders on the subject of a national conference, but the process should guarantee the sustenance of one strong, indivisible and united Nigeria. "All people of good moral conscience should discourage the continuous spilling of blood in the Niger Delta region, they urged . "Youth restiveness which lead to social instability will not allow for constructive development."Politicians should discourage the exploitation of religious and sectarian differences to promote conflicts", they added.
