Survey Favours Establishment of State Police From George Oji in Abuj A policy research organisation in Houston, Texas, "Global Think Tank," has said the result of a survey conducted in Nigeria and among Nigerians living in the United States has shown massive preference by Nigerians for state police. The report, which was made available to THISDAY by the organisation's Managing Director, Mr. Dandison Okeke showed that in craving for state police, most Nigerians favour the concurrent existence of the state and local government police with the federal police. It also recommended the training and incorporation of all the existing local vigilante groups into the new police structure. Explaining the method of operation of the proposed state police, the report disclosed that, "The current police organisation will stay, they will be called Federal Police Officers. They will patrol the interstate highways, guard federal installations and officials. Some of them can also be absorbed into the state police force. It added "The state and local government police forces will be recruited locally and would be answerable to the state and local government officials, who will then handle the police issues in their respective states. The states and local governments will fund the state police system with some help from the Federal Government. "All those local vigilante groups will now be trained and absorbed into the state and local government police. If we cannot afford police cars for them, we can provide them with motorcycles (Okada Police) to patrol all the local areas." The report described the recruitment of more police officers within the current system as nothing but, "bandaging a wound that needs major survey," saying that, "until the surgery is done, the wound will do nothing but deepen."
