British Envoy Sues for Peace in Niger Delta From Onwuka Nzeshi in Warri The British High Commissioner to Nigeria Mr Richard Gozney has sued for peace amongst leaders of the feuding ethnic groups in the Niger Delta, stating that only when peaceful co-existence was sustained in the would the economic fortunes of the region be utilised to its fullest for the benefit of the people and Nigeria. Gozney who assumed duties barely two weeks ago has been on special peace shuttles to key actors in the Warri ethnic conflict, a crisis that has tended to cripple oil exploration and production activities in the region over the last seven years. Specifically, the crisis has been one of the greatest concerns of the international community, including the British Government with its interest in the Royal Dutch multinational Shell, the single largest oil firm in the troubled region. The British envoy who paid a courtesy visit on Chief Edwin Clark, an Ijaw leader at the weekend expressed disarray at the opposition of some Ijaw leaders to the peace accord recently signed by the warring factions. Gozney said such opposition was not in the best interest of the people and the oil firms operating there and admonished Ijaw leaders.
