IG Seeks States' Budgetary Allocation for Police
From Agaju Madugba in Kaduna

Worried by inadequate material resource for officers and men of the Nigeria Police, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Tafa Balogun, has appealed to governors from across the country to make provisions for the police in their annual budgets.

He said that such initiative would go a long way in support for crime fighting, arguing that the Federal Government alone was incapable of meeting all the financial requirements of the police.

Balogun spoke our the weekend in Kaduna, when he took delivery of 50 new vehicles and motorcycles donated by the Kaduna state government for the state police Command and other security agencies.

Describing crime fighting as capital intensive, Balogun however noted that it was not possible to have a crimeless society. According to him, "we should have a tolerable level of crime for people to go about their normal businesses.

"We have the human resources but we lack materials. The Federal Government alone cannot provide enough support for the police. Security is the foundation of governance. Without security, there can never be good governance."

With enhanced mobility for the police in Kaduna, Governor Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, in his address at the ceremony asked criminals and other mischief makers to relocate from the state.

Makarfi said his government was determined to give the necessary support for the police in order to check crime wave in the area.

He said that government would soon provide protective gear for the police.

Some other beneficiaries of the vehicles include the Army, the State Security Services (SSS), the Air Force, Immigration and the NDLEA.
