World Bank to Work With Farmers, SMEs
From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos

The World Bank has affirmed its willingness to work directly with Nigerian farmers and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMES) for the development of the country.

The Bank's communication officer in Nigeria, Mr. Obadiah Tohomdet disclosed this at the closing ceremony of an investigate journalism workshop for journalists sponsored by the World Bank Institute.

According to Tohomdet, the Brethon Woods institution would only want to collaborate directly with these groups because of their strategic importance to the nation's development and industralisation.

In his words: "We want to work directly more with farmers and SMEs and have direct contact with them. Development is a process and we have learnt from our previous mistakes. We are willing to make amends and correct the mistakes."

While noting that the Structural Adjustment Progra-mme (SAP) in the 80s may not have achieved what it had intended to, the World Bank spokesman noted that the Bank has been repositioned in such a way that programmes that are now being formulated are fashioned out to meet the needs of the people and governments.

"We are working on our image and we are trying to correct our wrongs. We are committed to our country assisted strategy programme." He noted that presently, the Bank was working with the Nigerian government in formulating and implementing the needs programmes.

"We can't work with Nigeria without the needs strategy and we are now willing to work with states that do not want to work with us. We want to work more with farmers and SMEs" he stressed.
