CNPP Urges Ngige to Dissolve Transition Panel
Anambra
From Charles Onyekamuo in Awka
Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) a coalition of opposition political parties in Anambra State has urged the Governor, Dr Chris Ngige, to dissolve the transition committes of the state's 21 local government areas.
In an eight point resolution of the conference dated July 21, and made available to ThisDay in Awka at the weekend, the governor was urged to handover the functions of the committees to the Head of Personnel Management of the local governments, pending the conduct of council elections.
The resolution was signed by Hon. S. Nwobu Alor and Chief Mike Kwentoh, chairman and secretary respectively.
The coalition threatened to institute legal action at the Federal High Court to challenge the legality of the transition committees in the administration of council areas if after 21 days, the committees remain undissolved, adding that the state Independent Electoral Comm-ission should without delay, publish its time-table and guideline for the conduct of council elections, to enable opposition organise their envisaged active participation.
While hoping that the governor should keep to his advise to the visiting Federal INEC commissioner last week to ensure that all future elections are free from all forms of rigging, the coalition faulted Ngige for paying executive members of PDP salary from the state government coffers, describing it as illegal. If such salaries or allowances must be paid", the coalition said "it should also be paid to other political parties provided it is supported by an enabling law."
The coalition also said it had objectively and painstakingly considered the meaning and intent of election petitions, and found it difficult to understand why the electoral law failed to provide a time frame for the determination of an election petition.
It noted that a "situation where an election petition shall go on for upwards of two years in a 4 year term of office makes nonsense of justice in its totality".
