Community Threatens Petroleum Company Delta From Onwuka Nzeshi in Warri A Warri Refining and Petrochemicals Company (WRPC) which resumed operations of dormancy may be shut down again, as indigenes of Ubeji one of its host communities have threatened to halt its operations over issues of environment degradation and discrimination inpersonnel recruitment. Briefing newsmen on fresh plans to put the refinery under loack and key, representative of the community said it had been a victim of incessant pollution in t he last 19 years dure to alleged indiscriminate discharge of industrial wastes byWRPC into the community lands and creeks. It also expressed dismay in the perceived marginalisation of its indigenes in the company's ongoing recruitment exercise and urged that as one of the hosts, it deserved preference in the exercise in line with the Federal Government policy ofrecruiting sixty percent of personnel from indigenous workforce. A statement issued on behalf of the communities and signed by Griftson Omatsuli, warned that it would be forced to mobilise its people for mass action against WRPC if the company failed to address their grievances. 'The policy of the Federal Government on employment is that 60percent of total workforce inany Federal parastals be occupied by indigenes of the host community while 40 percent is for others. "Today, Warri Refining and Petrochemicals Company, a subsidiary of the NNPC has totally breached this policy." "What we have been enjoying from WRPC is incessant pollution of our environment and outright marginalisation of our people in the various recruitment exercises ino the company.
