Court Hears Suit Against CBN, October 7 lagos By Chika Amanze-Nwachuku A Federal High Court in Lagos will on October 7, resume hearing in a suit brought before it by over 1,000 retrenched workers of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to challenge alleged unlawful termination of their appointments. The new date was fixed, after the Court of Appeal, Lagos, dismissed a preliminary objection brought by the apex bank, challenging the jurisdiction and validity of the action. In a unanimous decision, the appellate court dismissed all the grounds of appeal and awarded N10,000 cost against the CBN. Sequel to the dismissal of the bank's preliminary objection and the order directing the CBN to take necessary steps to ensure proper trial of the substantive matter, Justice Rebecca Olomojobi, who took over the case after the exit of the former trial judge, Justice Chris Senlong, fixed October 7, for the resumed hearing. The affected workers, represented by Olasupo Adedeji, Chimezie Ahaneku, Nnamdi Osaji and eight others, had last year dragged the apex bank and the Attorney General of the Federation before the court, claiming that their appointments were prematuredly and arbitrarily terminated. According to the workers, they resorted to court action when all attempts to settle the matter amicably failed. They also said they had advised the CBN Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, to withdraw the court action and call for dialogue with a view to settling the matter amicably.
