Emir Counsels Journalists on Democracy Kwara From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambari has stressed the need for fair and objective reporting from journalists for an enduring democracy. The monarch hosting the executive committee of the Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by its chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Lamidi, pleaded with media men to shun sensational reporting. Stressing the need for an egalitarian society, the royal father told journalists to allow objectivity, fairness and balanced reporting be their watchwords. He described the press as a veritable stakeholder in nation building and urged them to strive for the promotion of peace, harmony, unity and progress. According to the monarch, yellow journalism and biased reporting of events could cause disharmony, acrimony and rancor capable of retarding the progress of the nation, just as he equally solicited the continued support and cooperation of journalists in the state for the Emirate council. Earlier, chairman of the NUJ, Lamidi has paid glowing tributes to the monarch for his role in unifying his subjects. He intimated him of the press week of the association which flagged off, Sunday with a church service, soliciting support and prayers of the royal father for the success of the week-long programme.
