Bauchi State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested about 35 drug suspects and seized drug exhibits weighing about 51.490 kilogrammes from January till date.
The drug exhibits recovered from the suspects were mainly cannabis sativa (indian hemp) and psychotropic substances while five of the 35 suspects have already been convicted in a Federal High Court in Jos.
One of the arrested suspects, Mr Ogechukwu Asonye, 38 years old from Imo State was arrested on 22nd June, 2003 with about 8.5 kg of cannabis sativa and released in court on bail, jumped bail but was rearrested with 22 kg of cannabis sativa on 12th May this year.
Speaking to THISDAY in Bauchi yesterday, state commander of the agency, Ms Omolade Faboyede said efforts of the command to rearrest Ogechukwu Asonye reflects the "zeal of the agency to ensure all drug suspects are brought to book despite their release on bail in court."
According to her, "statistics show that out of the 51.490 kg of drugs seized, 50.815 kg is cannabis sativa (indian hemp) and 575 grammes are psychotropic substances. She said the increase of addiction in the state is due to lack of adequate care by parents.
She added that "records of addicts treated and rehabilitated put at 50 persons from January to June shows that most of the patients get addicted without the knowledge of their parents and they only get to find out when the case is worst."
Faboyede then advised that parents should show more concern in the upkeep of their children and wards, saying that "they should get close to knowing their children instead of chasing money up and down."
While attributing her success to the cooperation and support received from Governor Mu'azu's administration, she said "the governor has been doing everything within his means to ensure that Bauchi State is ridded off drug problems."
