'Why Cultism Still Persists'
Ogun
By Uchenna Ohakam

Former Senator during the aborted Third Republic, Hon. Paul Ukpo, Ukpo has said the reason why cultism and other related social vices have remained unckecked despite Federal and State governments efforts in curbing it is due to immoral and violence-induced programmes broadcast by the media.

He disclosed this at the weekend, during the 8th graduation/prize giving ceremony of Loral International Secondary School, Igbesa, Ogun State, saying the escalting nature of cult-related issues in the country was as a result of the high incidence of programmes broadcast, which instead of stimulating a conscious appraoch of instilling moral etiquette to the masses, has resulted in the imbibing of such negative vices to the detriment of the society.

He urged the federal government to evolve policies that would assist the regulatory agencies saddled with the task of moderating the various types of materials broadcast on the media adding that except such is done, the fight against cultism may remain a tall dream.

He pointed out that the cultism trend has degenerated to a level which required drastic action to be taken in order to save the country from an imminent braindrain in the educational sector.

Ukpo canvassed a total re-orientation for students through the prescription of books and literatures that would help sensitise them (students) as well as check the escalating nature of cultism in higher institutions.

Director of Schools' Affairs for Loral, Chief Crawford Ndukwe said going by the nature of academic trainings which the students were exposed to, there was nothing stopping the students from not achieving academic excellence upon graduation.
