Niger Delta Youths Hail Oil Firms Rivers From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt Youths of the Niger Delta region have hailed the resolve of oil companies to remit their outstanding contributions to the Niger Delta Development Com-mission (NDDC). The oil firms under the aegis of Oil Producers Trader Section (OPTS), Lagos Chambers of Commerce met with the management of the NDDC in Port Harcourt and promised to settle the arrears of the 3 percent contributions they were owing to the commission to facilitate it's operation. Barely 24 hours after the oil firms took the resolution, youths in the region coming under the umbrella of the Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM) hailed the development describing it as a good omen. The President of the Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM) Mr. Onengiye Elekima told THIS DAY that the decision by the oil firm to remit the money in full to the NDDC was an expression of confidence in the performance of the agency." According to him, the development had vindicated the position of the group that the NDDC has performs creditably well since it's inception. "Those who have been canvassing for the scrapping of the NDDC should listen to the comments of the oil firms, which are mostly denominated by white men who do not have a place for anything short of transparency," he said. The NDYM youth leader said nothing should be done to threaten the smooth operation of the NDDC since it remained the only source of hope for the Niger Delta people, adding, "to us in the Niger Delta, the NDDC remains our firm, industry and source of empowerment.
