Men Blamed for Women Absence at Seminar Bayelsa From John Iwori in Yenagoa Inability of women to attend the recently concluded four-day national workshop on effective childcare in Abuja, has been blamed on the non supportive role of men, especially those at the helm of affairs at the third tier of governance. The workshop with the theme, "effective childcare, the challenge of Nigerian women", which took place at the National Centre for Women Development, ended a few days ago with participants drawn from all the local government areas, as well as representatives of women groups across the country. In a chat with THISDAY yesterday, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development , Chief Mrs Remi Kuku, attributed the poor attendance of women to the refusal of their husbands to sponsor them for the workshop. Kuku expressed dismay that a national workshop with "so much to offer" did not attract a great number of women, especially those at the grassroots. She particularly flayed council chairmen across the federation whose wives did not attend the workshop, for what she called "the non-supportive and indifferent attitude of councils' helmsmen".
