'2005 PDP Convention'll Decide Presidency'
From John Iwori in Yenagoa
As the clamour for various major political positions ahead of the 2007 general elections gather steam, a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, Hon. Fyneman Wilson has predicted that the National Covention of the party slated for 2005 will be the deciding factor.
Wilson, who is the Deputy Chairman of PDP in Bayelsa State said the outcome of the party's congresses at the state and convention at the national level will go a long way in determining which zone or senatorial district will produce the next president or governor.
The PDP chief assured that the party would conduct its congress with transparency and fairness, even as he added that "no crisis can destabilize PDP because it has a formidable internal machinery to resolve any crisis that may arise from the congress".
He contended that it was the turn of Bayelsa East to produce the next governor of the state because "Bayelsa Central has produced a two-term governor just as Bayelsa West has taken the slot of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly in 1999 and 2003".
He maintained that the next governor should not only be academically and financially sound, but must be an active politician who knows the political game.
"The 2007 governorship polls is not for mediocre but for serious minded politician who are determined to make a significant change in the lives of the people", he said.
Lamenting the poor state of the party finances, the PDP chief accused ministers, commissioners, council chairmen and other notable political appointees, who got to their various positions on the platform of PDP as having abandoned the party.
He, however praised the chairman of Southern Ijaw local gsovernment area, Hon Steven Diver for "his tremendous assistance to PDP in Bayelsa State".
Willson said "there is no truth in the insinuations in some quarters that a cousin of Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, Chief Abel Ebifemowei has the party machinery in his armpit."
He argued that no single individual can control the party because the political gladiators, who made things happen in old Rivers State are from Bayelsa State and are still actively involved in the politics of the state, particularly in PDP.
