Council Chairman Tasked on Urban Drift From Efem Nkangan in Uyo The Chairman, Ethical and Attitudinal Orientation Commission (EARCOM) in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Eseme Eyiboh has charged local government helmsmen in the state, to reside in their local government areas in order to ensure good governance and curb rural urban drift. Eyiboh said that it was wrong for councilors to reside in guest houses and hotels, instead of their council areas. He dismissed the excuse of lack of security being touted as the reasons why chairmen and councillors abscond from their councils, pointing out that the councilors campaigned in those same areas safely before they got their mandate to represent the people. "Councilors and chairmen have been campaigning as candidates without fear of insecurity, but the minute they get their mandate they now reside in hotels etc and that is not good for good governance'',he stressed. He, stressed that local government councils were created to bring government nearer to the people and the officials must live near the people in order to knows first hands the challenges confronting the people with a view of proferring solutions to it. He explained that EARCOM was concerned with the issue of good governance, and urged every Akwaibomite to rise up and be alive to his responsibilities. Eyiboh also said the state government has tackled the servitude syndrome of the Akwaibomite through evolving scholarship schemes that will provide the opportunity for the people to improve their self-esteem. He said the commission will not relent in its commitment to disseminate, articulate it activities, urging the people to rise up to the challenges of displaying its natural endowment and self assertion.
