Adidas to Dress Team Nigeria to Athens By Wale Ajimotokan German sports equipment makers adidas has been selected as the official kitters of the Team Nigeria to next month's Olympic Games in Athens. THISDAY Sports learnt exclusively that adidas sponsorship package with the Nigerian Olympic team is worth N20million. The package has already been ratified by the Sports Ministry. Details of the deal made available to us reveal that adidas will supply branded vests, track suits, shoes and an unspecified sum of money to boost the team currently on a training tour of Europe and the Caribbean. Under this arrangement Nigerian teams for basketball, weightlifting, tennis, football, boxing and wrestling will endorse adidas kits in their respective events. The only exception, however, to this arrangement is track and field where there already exists an independent contract between the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and Italian equipment makers Fila. The Fila deal will elapse at the end of the season. Impeccable Sports Mini-stry sources hinted that unhappy at the prospect of Team Nigeria filing out in two separate sports brands the Sports Minister Musa Muhammed has directed that in future sponsorship package especially kit endorsement involving the Nigerian team to a major international competition should be all embracing. Under the proposed co-ordinated plan adidas, which will during the week announce a three-year package deal with the Sports Ministry, will kit the entire Nigerian contingent to the next Commonwealth Games in 2006. Presently the Super Falcons courtesy of a sponsorship deal with the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) will campaign at the Games in adidas strips. Early this year adidas entered into $100,000 endorsement deal with the Nigeria Football Association (NFA).
