Plateau's Issah Wins MTN's Enugu Marathon
From Duro Ikhazuagbe in Enugu

Fwatfhak Issah of Plateau State who only heard of the zonal marathon race hours to the event yesterday won the Enugu zone of the MTN sponsored International Half Marathon to qualify for the main event coming up in Lagos in November.

According to the winner, "I heard of the race only on Friday morning. So I had to organise and came with an all-night bus trip to Enugu." He won the race with a time of 1:13:52 followed by Mathew Okoro of Enugu State with 1:14:08 and the third entrant is Mitu Diyak, also of Plateau State with 1:14:25 secs.

The sponsors, MTN Nigeria has already stated that the top 10 qualifiers from the zones would be sponsored for the Lagos meet, in which eight males and two females got their qualification ticket.

The two female qualifiers from Enugu are Genevieve Njoku with a time of 1:30:30 secs and Joy Eze who returned 1:36:39. Njoku, a bronze medallist at the last National Sports Festival in 800m recently converted to marathon, which she hopes "to work on my time to see if I can win the international meet in Lagos.

The well attended race attracted about 3,000 runners in what was a surprise response. The snags being that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) team that were to mark off the roads did not do their jobs well exposing the athletes to the risk of being run down by motorists.

Also, there were attempts by some athletes to cheat. They took motor bikes to join the finish lines only to be exposed by the facts that they do not possess the appropriate ribbons from mark-off points. This, the organisers promised to look into for subsequent races.

The next race is that of Kaduna zone which is billed for a fortnight.
