Tennis: Aging Agassi is Still Driven

Andre Agassi once embodied cockiness, embraced the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, and on the tennis courts dominated opponents with an intimidating, in-your-face style of play.

Now at 34 - the oldest player on the ATP tour - his aging body has to work harder for every point against tennis sharks 10 years younger. And Agassi's former cockiness has been replaced by a more laid-back, philosophical view of his sport, himself and, it seems, life.

Dressed comfortably, Agassi spoke to reporters yesterday at the Tennis Masters Canada tournament at the Rexall Centre where he's preparing for his first-round match against Germany's Tommy Haas, which will take place right after opening ceremonies tomorrow night.

Some might recall those camera ads about 15 years ago that featured Agassi promoting the catch phrase "Image is everything." To hear him speak yesterday that line might now read "Substance is everything."

"I'd probably do my best to avoid trying to (encapsulate myself) in a phrase at the risk of somebody actually believing that that can encompass a person,'' said Agassi, who is married to former tennis great Steffi Graf, with whom he has a young son and infant daughter.

Once an overpowering force - in his career Agassi has victories in all of tennis' Grand Slams and has won over $28 million (all U.S. figures) since he blew like a gale force on to the court at age 16 - his performance has dropped off noticeably of late.

He has no titles this year and has won less than half a million in prize money. Shortly after he pulled out of Wimbledon with hip problems, stories began appearing in the media that he was going to retire after this year's U.S Open. He has since shot down those rumours, saying he has no such plans and will continue until the game won't let him any more.
