Chukwu stays on
The NFA technical
committee, headed by Sulaiman David, has recommended that the contract of Super
Eagles coach Christian ‘Chairman’ Chukwu be extended by another two
years when it expires next month.
“We have
recommended that Chukwu’s contract as chief coach of the Eagles be
extended for another two years,” David said after the committee’s meeting in Abuja Friday.
“Chukwu has
done well since he took charge of the team and it will be very much in order
that he remains a part of the team even when the new foreign coach is
appointed, hopefully next month.”
Chukwu’s
assistants, Augustine Eguavoen and Amusa Adisa are also expected to get the
same extension to their stay with the national team when their contracts expire
at the end of August.
However, the
recommendation of the technical committee will have to be ratified by an
emergency meeting of the NFA board expected to take place next month.
Chukwu took charge
of the Eagles in August 2002 and during his second spell with the national
team, the Eagles placed third at the African Nations Cup in Tunisia and the
country’s FIFA ranking has improved to an impressive 18th best team in
the world. The Eagles under Chukwu
are also topping their qualifying group for the 2006 World Cup and Nations Cup.
Algeria, Angola, Gabon, Rwanda and Zimbabwe are the other teams in the group.
