Wednesday, July 28 2004 Vol 17 No.30 News Editorial Politics Opinion Features Foreign News The Arts Sports Education Business Money/Market Travels/Tourism Property/Environment Columnists 150 FERMA men attack chairman •Injure 8 staff FUNKE ODUWOLE OVER 150 men of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) Tuesday stormed the secretariat of the Lagos Island West Local government, attacking the chairman, Mrs. Derin (Braithwaite) Disu, beating up the staff and leaving about eight of them injured. But the State Police Command told Daily Champion last night that it was not aware of the incident. The attackers, according to the Council chairman, were led by one Mr. Saheed Salawe who said he is one of the Special Implementation Assistants to the Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe. She said Mr. Salawe burst into her office at about 2.00p.m during a meeting with her councillors and secretaries. She alleged that she was physically assaulted by the thugs who were brandishing cutlasses and broken bottles. "Mr. Salawe claimed to be an agent of the Federal Government and the Federal Ministry of Works and said he came to warn us to desist from encroaching on federal governments roads and property. "He said my local government is not recognized and so I am not recognized as the chairman and we should therefore desist from collecting any rate from the markets, motor parks or public toilets in the area. "He actually attacked me. They rushed at me in the midst of the meeting threatening me. They have taken over all my markets, my toilets and my markets, my toilets and all the motor parks and car parks. They said we are encroaching on Federal government’s property", Disu stated.
