House of Representatives panel indicts committee chairmen
From John-Abba Ogbodo, Abuja

A SHAKE-UP seems imminent in the House of Representatives committees following a panel report which indicted some of the committee chairmen.

The Guardian learnt that preparatory to today's resumption of legislative activities by the House after an eight-week recess, the selection committee, comprising principal officers of the House headed by the Speaker, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari and principal officers of the House, met for several hours yesterday, studying a report presented by the ad-hoc committee.

The committee's report will form the basis of appointment and reappointment of the standing committee chairmen.

The report, according to The Guardian sources, indicted several committee chairmen over lackadaisical approach to work while others were indicted for not being able to produce any report on the oversight functions carried out in the last legislative year.

Others were said to have duplicated chairmen of sub-committees while some of the members chaired two or more sub-committees. In some cases, it was discovered that subcommittee chairmen were never appointed and where appointed, they were not allowed to function as their offices demanded.

The Guardian learnt that the area that most touched the leadership of the Lower House was the report that some committee chairmen compromised in their areas of oversight function.

It was, therefore, recommended that those indicted should be stripped of their duplicated positions.

Nevertheless, some committee chairmen were commended for giving the House adequate representation in their oversight functions.`
