Customs detains pilot, plane over contraband
From Adamu Abuh, Kano

THE Nigerian Customs Service has detained a pilot and his three-member crew for allegedly flying a cargo plane with contraband goods into the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA).

The pilot is being held at the office of the agency on Katsina road in the Kano metropolis.

An official of the Customs Service, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the detention. He disclosed that the plane landed from Saudi Arabia on Saturday with a full load of assorted banned textile materials.

According to him: "The plane flew in from Jeddah with banned textile materials. It is true we detained the pilot and his plane but this is the reason for our action."

The Guardian further learnt that the pilot told officials of the customs service during inspection that the goods belonged to Nigerians deported recently from Saudi Arabia. However, the inability of the pilot to produce convincing evidence led to his arrest and subsequent detention of his plane.

The seized goods, wrapped in several bales, have been kept at the Nigerian Airports Haulage Company (NAHCO) shed within the airport.

The Guardian learnt that both the Minister of State for Finance and the Comptroller General of Customs are due in Kano tomorrow in connection with the incident.
