Towards an Indo-Pakistan super state
SIR: The leaders of India and Pakistan should throw aboard old animosities, antiquated rivalries and narrow interests in order to forge an Indo-Pakistan super state.
This solid block of Asian nuclear powers should build an economic and political union which would help them to plough their resources into welfare schemes for their suffering masses.
It is true that the origin of their misunderstandings can be located in British imperial politics of divide and rule.
The on-going reconciliatory talks should enter into top gear so that both states can check the monstrous neglect of the poor and banish the crying evil of murderous cross-border pursuits. If military operations cease, Pakistan could water the Thar Desert and level the arid Baluchi hills, to use a hyperbole. India could level the Himalayas and turn the Bay of Bengal into wonderland.
India's historical experiences were influenced by the machinations of the British India Company, the viceroys, the maharajas and the crazy discriminatory skin-colour tradition. All these conspired to keep down a talented people famous for their beauty and mild manners.
In the past 10 years, India and Pakistan have pushed their nuclear programmes very far and the experiment has become extremely wide. These developments led to unfortunate and happy relations both at national and personal levels. Warm handshakes, protocol-induced smiles could not help matters. Cricket matches were temporarily hand-clapping past-times.
The ill-feelings were frequently expressed by shootings at the borders where the sons of the underprivileged froze in winter and were roasted in the Monsoon seasons. This is why the present diplomatic efforts must succeed so that peace may reign.
