BENIN CITY — FORMER Minister of Foreign Affairs and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tom Ikimi has sent a strongly-worded petition to President Olusegun Obasanjo against the acting chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, asking him to call Anenih to order in the interest of the party and sustenance of democracy in the country.
Vanguard learnt that Chief Ikimi in the more than 45-page petition alleged that Anenih has been oppressing him and working against his interest since he joined the party. He also narrated how the president’s chief strategist seized his local government, Igueben in Edo State from him contrary to the agreement reached when they came to beg him to join the party.
Chief Ikimi asked Vanguard when contacted yesterday in Benin City, “how did you know I wrote a petition against Anenih?” He, however, confirmed that he wrote a petition against the Uromi-born politician but said “I do not wish to discuss it in the media, my petition is to the President and I want him to react to it first.”
It was learnt that copies of the petition were forwarded to the national chairman of the party, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Chief Anenih and the Edo State governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion.
Another issue Ikimi was said to have raised in his petition is how Anenih single handedly opposed his nomination by the party in the South-South zone as a member of the Board of Trustees but a source close to him said that “even if Obasanjo decides to change the situation today, Ikimi would not accept to serve as a member of the Board with Anenih as the chairman because of their not so cordial relationship.
“Our leader, Ikimi does not want to make the petition public because of what happened in the case of the Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, where the President said he had not received the letter by the time it was made public. But his response is taking time to come bearing in mind that it was written since July 1, 2004”, a close source to him said.
