Apologise over June 12 or
forget 2007, Soyinka tells IBB
JOHN SHIKLAM,
Kaduna
THE ghost of the June 12, 1993
presidential election is still hunting former military President, Gen. Ibrahim
Badamasi Babangida as Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka yesterday demanded that
he apologised to Nigerians for insulting their sensibilities in annulling the
polls.
Soyinka said such apology was needed now rather than the
Minna-born nursing a fresh presidential ambition for 2007 even as the literary
icon noted that progressives have been mobilising to identify a credible
presidential candidate for 2007.
The June 12, 1993 polls was presumed to
have been won by the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola of the defunct Social Democratic
Party (PDP).
Prof. Soyinka, who spoke at an interactive
session with members of the Kaduna Discussion Group (KOG) in Kaduna said the
speculated presidential ambition of Gen. Babangida is like a dream that can
hardly be realised in Nigeria.
He said what the former military leader
needed to do is to tender an apology to Nigerians and ask for forgiveness from
them before dreaming of staging a come-back as the president of the country.
"Even after his apology, he would have to
represent himself for public scrutiny for Nigerians to decide.
"If he wants to start on a clean slate, he
must apologise to this nation especially for thwarting the democratic wishes of
the nation - the June 12 presidential elections," Soyinka said.
Professor Soyinka said riding on the wave
of having ruled the nation in the past was not an evidence to democratic
credentials, maintaining that Nigerians can no longer be taken for an easy ride.
Also, at another forum with Northern
progressive, Prof. Soyinka said progressive elements in the country regardless
of their political, religions or tribal inclinations are already mobilising to
identify a credible presidential candidate for the 2007 elections.
